Fillings / Tooth Filling in Calgary
Efficient and effective treatment for cavities in Calgary
Fillings are a restorative and preventative treatment to help you keep your oral health on track. Regular checkups can help to detect and remedy cavities before they become more problematic.

Metal fillings are a thing of the past

These days, we use tooth-coloured dental fillings to restore your smile. Also known as composite or resin fillings, this tooth-coloured dental filling material will look and feel just like your natural tooth. This helps to keep your smile bright and white.

Prevention is better than cure
Stopping dental decay before you need a tooth filling is the best line of treatment. But this isn’t always enough. Some people are more prone to cavities and will need more dental fillings in their life. The important thing is that you seek treatment before you need more extensive treatment like a root canal or extraction. This is why we like to think of dental fillings as another kind of preventative treatment.

Not all cavities are obvious.
Some cavities can only be detected using specialist instruments. This is why it’s important to see us for regular checkups, so we can spot the signs of decay that may be hard to detect and act quickly.
Here’s what you can expect from a tooth filling appointment
Nervous about your dental filling? Don’t worry, we’re here to put you at ease.
A dental filling is a short and pain-free procedure. It all starts with an injection in your gums to numb the area. Once this is completed, a team member will check the area to make sure you can’t feel anything. Dr. Newman will then use specialist tools to remove the decaying portion of the tooth. You will hear drilling sounds and feel pressure – but won’t experience pain – in your tooth.
Next, Dr. Newman will clean and wash out the area to make sure no bacteria or decay remains in the hole. The tooth filling material will then be prepared. This is a resin which is cured, or hardened, using a UV light. The material is packed into the hole and cured to create a hard finish. This is done in small layers to make sure the final layer matches your bite.
The procedure is almost finished. Dr. Newman will now ask you to bite down so they can check if the tooth filling material is lined up with your bite. If it’s too high or low, you might struggle to chew your food, so adjustments will be made accordingly. When it’s just right, Dr. Newman will remove any sharp or angular bits and cure the material one last time. The resin will now be fully bonded to your tooth and the restoration will be complete!
After your appointment, you'll be able to get on with your day. In more complex cases where a filling may not be sufficient, you may need to be fitted for an inlay, an onlay, or a crown to help restore your tooth. You can read more about the process of fitting a crown here.
